Celebrity endorsement works for Nestle....

The celebrity endorsement of George Clooney has helped Nestle achieve worldwide sales of its Nespresso coffee machine hit £1.2bn in 2008, up 30% on 2007. This was the 8th consecutive year that the product's annual sales have risen by 30% or more.

So what is the secret of it's success? First launched in 1986, the process produces a decent espresso with no spillages to clean up and there are a variety of blends to choose from. Some analysts believe it is this simplicity which is the brand's popularity.

Advertising analysts say this is only half the story - they say Nestle's marketing has been "first class".
  • Huge marketing centred on the celebrity endorsement of George Clooney.
  • Data capture - consumers are automatically enrolled in a loyalty programme, receiving magazines and the feeling that they are part of an exclusive club.
  • Minimising the places you can buy the pods from to just the company itself.
  • Creating machines that only work with the capsules, ensuring repeat purchasing.
  • Nestle work with manufacturers to keep the costs of the machines down.
Overall, a great example of marketing and advertising at work.

Virgin Atlantic advert - is it "sexist"?

The Advertising Standards Authority have dismissed complaints from 29 people that the current Virgin Atlantic advert is "sexist". The advert is set in 1984 to celebrate the 25th birthday of Virgin Atlantic and the general complaint was that the advert was "offensive because it was sexist and presented a stereotypical view of gender roles." The ASA decided that "most viewers would understand that the advert presented exagerrated stereotypical views of the early 1980s and played upon perceived attitudes of that time in a humorous way."

Role of the ASA:

Monitors all advertising, sales, promotions and direct marketing. Covers newspapers, magazines, billboards, text messages, internet banner adverts, radio and TV. They can ask the advertiser to withdraw or amend an advert if it is found to be offensive or untruthful.

Strike action across UK

As if anticipating what we are studying in Higher Business Management, the main news story on this afternoons BBC News website is about the refinery strikes breaking out across the UK. The main elements of the story are:

  • The original strike started in Lincolnshire because Total, the owner of the Lindsey Oil Refinery, awarded a contract to an Italian firm.

  • Other strikes broke out across the UK in support of the mass walkout at the Lindsey Oil Refinery.

  • The leaders of Unite, the largest union in the UK with over 2 million members in the public and private sector, and the GMB, a general union anyone can join, are pressuring the Prime Minister to meet with the heads of industry in the engineering and construction industry.

  • They unions want the rights of their members to have the opportunity to be employed.

  • The Unite leader, Derek Simpson, said workers felt powerless as they watched foreign workers get employment while they remain unemployed.

The full story is available on the BBC News website. As we have spoken about in class, the trade unions offer the powerless individuals the opportunity to group together to have an important voice. The walkout is the first piece of industrial action they have taken.

Woolworths - The value of a brand

One of the topics we recently covered as part of the Marketing unit was branding. The BBC have just published an interesting article on the value of the Woolworths name in light of its imminent demise.

The article gives an interesting account of the problems faced by a well known high street brand name when compared with younger, online retailers like Google or Yahoo, and image-focused companies like Nike or Adidas.

The article is well worth a look. Feel free to leave a comment with your views.

DFS advert banned by Advertising Standards Authority

Hot on the heels of Apple being found guilty of misleading advertising by the Advertising Standards Authority, furniture retailer DFS have had their advertising banned for making their sofas look too big.

They admitted using special technology to superimpose actors into domestic settings but denied trying to make their sofas look bigger. However, the ASA concluded that although DFS had not intended to exaggerate the size of its sofas, "some of the sofas did appear large in relation to the actors."

Here is the offending advert - see what you think

Apple advert banned by ASA

As we have been discussing the role of the Advertising Standards Authority in recent weeks in relation to Marketing, I thought this was an interesting story. Apple have been found guilty of exaggerating the speed of their new 3G iPhone. Their claims that it was "really fast" was backed up by footage showing internet pages loading up in less than a second. 17 complaints were made by people who said the advert had misled them as to is speed and the advert has now been banned.

Learning Point:

The ASA is a voluntary body set up to monitor advertising in the UK - advertisements must be legal, honest, truthful and not cause offence.

Why do we need economic growth?

The BBC have an interesting article on their website which I recommend you have a look at. It explains the reasons why economic growth is important and could give you some useful extra information to increase your own knowledge. As well as giving a simple definition of what economic growth is, it highlights its benefits and costs.

If you read it, leave a message and tell me what you think.
